Here’s a roundup of three of the best free bass plugins to use for DI recording, jamming live, or for practicing.

Lately I’ve been learning to play the bass guitar mostly for recording purposes because when you like playing metal and hard rock like I do, fake bass just doesn’t cut it in the mix, not unless you want to spend a fortune on bass modeling software and then spend countless hours learning how to use it.

There’s no substitute for the real thing, and with the free plugins below you can make your bass sound like a beast.

It’s amazing how easy it is to get even a cheap bass guitar to sound great with these plugins.

So far my favorite is Ignite Amp’s SHB-1. You can get a good range of tones with it, and it’s easy on CPU usage. But the TSE B.O.D sounds good too.

I haven’t had a chance to test out the free Solid State Bass Preamp that comes with AmpliTube Custom Shop, but it’s another good free option. IK’s Ampeg SVX is one of the more popular paid bass amp sim plugins.

Best Free Bass Amp Sim Plugins

The GK Amplification 2 from Audiffex is a free bass amp sim modeled after a Gallien Krueger bass amp and it also comes with a MB 150 cabinet and an Audix D6 mic. It works as a plugin in VST, AU, and AAX formats and it’s also a standalone program.

The SHB-1 is modeled after the real SHB-1 bass tube amp, which was custom built by Ignite Amps for Federico Fulceri, the bass player for the Italian thrash/death metal band Subhuman. The plugin is available for PC and Mac in AU and VST formats, with support for 64 and 32 bit.

The layout of Vocal Rider is simple. There are three sliders. One is the actual vocal rider slider, one is the output level, and the other is the range slider. The range slider is what you use to set the average level that your vocals need to be at in relation to the rest of the mix. Once you have set that, if you need to boost the output volume, you do that with the output slider. A classic preamp and EQ combo

Another great plugin designed by the world-renowned Andrew Scheps, the Waves Scheps 73 is a 3-band EQ and mic preamp module modeled on the classic 1073 console. The Scheps 73’s EQ is so closely modeled after the 1073 that it emulates its behavior with lots of precision.

The specs of the EQ include a fixed 12 kHz high frequency band, switchable low and midrange bands with cut and boost controls for each, and a high-pass filter with a ratio of 18 dB per octave. A 10 kHz midrange band is also made to be operable in the plugin, although it was made to be operated on the 1078 channel strip. Saturation (controlled by the drive knob) is modeled after the 1073’s saturation and captures all of the harmonic details and sonic characteristics of the 1073. It sounds extremely authentic and warm.

Other features include the ability to monitor the stereo channel, mono channel, and left and right channels separately. You can also EQ the mid and side channels with this plugin. If you do like coloration and want a very warm, rich, full sounding vocal or instrument, use the Scheps 73 and you will be beyond satisfied.

What is a Compressor?

Compressors are a bit of a controversial plugin in some ways, as to many it is mystery how it works… and even more of a mystery as to what it can do for them.

This is especially true when it comes to vocal compression.

But as simply put as possible, a compressor compresses dynamic range. So that means that above a set volume (threshold), the compressor will limit the amount of volume increase going out the back end (output) compared to what is coming in the front end (Input).

Given that basic function (compressing and audio signal’s dynamic range), you can imagine the vistas of creative potential open to producers. Imaginative engineers realized you could use them creatively to re-shape the transient shape of sounds. Presto! Compression algorithms became secret sauce.

Hence many fancy named compression techniques, such as of side-chaining, parallel compression, etc., are now used. But not just in a technical way, but as if the compressor was itself a musical instrument.

However, we are on the topic of vocal compressor plugins. So, keeping that in mind, there are a few features that every good compressor should have. Let’s find out.

Features to look for & How to choose

If you follow forum discussions, you will find a lot of opinions about the various types of processors out there. Each producer has their favorite because, given time and experience, one compressor can be somewhat like another.

All compressors ~~will~~ should have these:

Threshold – which determines the level your audio signal must be before the compressor can reduce its volume.
Ratio – determines the level of compression that will be applied to the audio signal once the loudness threshold is reached.
Attack – how fast or slow the compressor will be activated to reduce loudness.
Release – how fast or slow the compressor will be deactivated to return the audio signal to is original level.
Knee – smooths out the ratio so that there isn’t a sudden change in dynamics.
Make-Up Gain – used to “make-up” the amount of gain that has been lost from all that amplitude attenuation.
Output – allows you to increase or decrease the sound coming out of the compressor to a desired level.

Character and Vanilla

There are “Character” units, and “Vanilla” units. Like the name suggests, a good character compressor will add some depth and personality to your vocals. A vanilla compressor will get the job done without you know it was even in the room, like a good butler.

Other than that, another thing to look for in a compressor is versatility. That and the ability to get the results you want reasonably quickly.

Sometimes those things will conflict a bit. That is why we choose a plugin which fits our needs the best.

Softube is a great name in overdrive DSP and this FET emulation has many, many fans. This one is of an optical unit. A high-ticket opto unit that many love for its “musicality,” but may be out of some user’s budget.

Feature wise it’s a lot like the popular CLA-76 from Waves that we mention below, but the source unit has a unique behavior that made them a top choice. The optical method is prone to being softer and gentler to vocals, while still being able to lay down the law when necessary.

It is all about the secret DSP sauce of how nothing is really linear. Add 2db of Gain and suddenly your sound is different. Changing one knob is like changing five knobs on a “clean” compressor. Over time you can get a sense of what is going on. Until then…

You tend to start out wiggling the vaguely labelled knobs and suddenly something great appears in the murk. This is character processing at its best, and if the unit sounds good then you can’t beat it.

The only downside to nitpick at is that if you’re a control freak you can also find it frustrating, since you can’t so much “control” this unit but rather “guide” it like an air traffic controller guiding a Boeing 747 onto land.

Digital Suburban did (and they had 15 years or so between the invention of the VST norm and the release of Dexed to do so!), and having set it as an free open source project is even greater. It's a shame that while Roland used to own cakewalk software that they didn't do - atleast for their in-house daw Sonar - a D50 VST emulation. These are the patches I personally like, and it's my hope that these banks can spare some people from spending hours wading through the trash on the Dexed Cart to find one usable patch like I did. Argotlunar is a tool for creating surreal transformations of audio streams. Specifically, it is a real-time delay-line granulator. It disintegrates an audio stream into short samples (grains). Each grain can have random settings of amplitude, panning, duration, delay, pitch, glissando, filter and envelope. The output of all grains is mixed together into a stream which can be fed back into the main input.

Time-related parameters can be synced to the host tempo, for rhythmic and pulsing textures. Pitch-related parameters can be quantized for harmonic and melodic effects. Feedback can create chaotic, densely layered, and distorted sounds.

Most of the parameters can be correlated. Examples:

Filter cut-off correlated with pitch: Higher filter cut-off for grains with higher pitch, and vice versa.
Grain duration correlated with panning: Grains with shorter duration panned to the center of the stereo field, and grains with longer duration panned wide in the stereo field.

This freeware softsynth is an emulator of the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer, which was released in 1983. But don’t be misled: not all of its sounds are 80s-tastic. It actually comes with some beautiful pads and plenty of other useful presets to keep you busy for quite a while. And, of course, if you do want some new-wave-sounding textures, this would be a good place to find them.

The sound quality is good and it’s a great introduction to the world of softsynths for novices.

Once you get used to how it works, you’ll be crafting your own synth sounds in no time – and it’s always good to have a free way of doing that.

With over 4,000 presets categorized by musical genre, strumming simulation for its “chord mode,” an efficient arpeggiator and all sorts of other features, Predator has been one of the best VSTs around for years. If you’ve been interested in VSTs for a while then you’ve surely heard of this one by now.

There is a demo available for download, however it only works for 30 minutes at a time, you won’t be able to save your presets, and it will only work for 30 days, after which it will add noise to the playback, rendering it relatively useless. It costs $179 for the full version, but at least with the demo you’ll have plenty of time to get a feel for how it works and what you can create with it.

This second generation of the Zebra softsynth is more powerful than its predecessor in pretty much every aspect. It has a huge bank of original sounds and contains many of the usual suspects when it comes to methods of modifying textures, but it also has a very useful Wave Editor page that lets you generate your own sounds, for all you sound designers out there who like to make your own noise. There’s also a Synthesis page where you can tweak your sounds in even more interesting ways and save your own patches. There are also plenty of free patches you can find online.

A useful feature of the Zebra2 is its clever way of organizing the sound library: you can mark certain sounds you don’t like as “junk,” which will then be hidden from you, and you can mark others as favorites which will be given a yellow star next to their names. This way you don’t have to repeatedly cycle through the sounds you know you’re never going to use.

This one isn’t free either at $199, but there is a demo version available – although, after 2 minutes, it’ll start playing random notes along with what you’ve created.

A legendary standalone program and VST plugin coming from one of the most innovative music creation companies in the industry, Absynth has long been in a category all its own. It’s known for not only being a great tool for electronic music producers looking for more leftfield textures to work with, but also for being beneficial to sound designers, since it offers so much in the way of modifying sounds.

Absynth 5 comes with 200 new synth sounds and some interesting additions to its already solid repertoire, including a much easier way to search for sounds through descriptive keywords and a new effect called the Aetherizer that lets you make textures that range from metallic to liquid to just plain otherworldly. It has 2 new filters and a new Mutate feature that randomizes the parameters for any patch you want to use.

Its price is steep at $199, but this is a plugin you’ll be putting uncountable hours into.

Here is a total of 468 soundbanks (14'973 patches) that I converted from the SynLib DX/TX Editor library (Marc Bareille's program) and organized in 32 patches standard sysex files (.syx - 4'104 octets). Here is my top 10 of the must have plugins for music production when you are starting out in 2021!
Before I start, I name not only VST plugins but also AU plugins for windows and mac.
Most of the plugins are cross platform.

10 Sylenth 1

My first plugin on the list is a pretty popular synthesizer.
I`m not counting the factory presets as the best, but you can make your sound from scratch or change the presets to your liking or buy a preset from Splice for example.

9 Pro-R

The first (and not the last) plugin of Fabfilter of this list.
This is the reverb plugin from Fabfilter. It’s not as popluar as Valhalla Reverb for example, but I think it’s a good one.
You can target certain frequencies with the built in equalizer which is really handy.
Yes, you can see what is happening so you get more feeling with your reverb sound.

8 Pro-C

The compressor from Fabfilter. Also with this plugin you can see on the screen what is happening with your sound.
Super useful for beginners.
If you have trouble understanding what a compressor does and what it`s influence is on the sound, the fabfilter pro C is your guy!
You can target certain frequencies with the build in equalizer and even hear a preview of that.

7 Quikquak pitchwheel

This is just a cheap and simple plugin to pitch up or down.
In combination with automation this is ideal for making risers in buildups.
It may be not the best sounding plugin, but it will do the job just fine.
But the speed in which the plugin reacts to automation could be improved.

6 Spire

This one is pretty popular amongst electronic music producers.
If you are scared by all the knobs I have another alternative down in this list.
The presets are ok, but not superb. if you want better ones you can buy them from Splice for example.

5 Kick

Make kicks with Kick.
This is a pretty inexpensive plugin to shape your kick any way you like.
And also in key with your song.
It is also possible to select a click sound as top kick.

4 LFO tool by Xfer Records

The low frequency oscillator tool is mostly used for the pumping effect with 4 to the floor beats.
But it can do much more than that.
If you want only the side chain pumping effect, Kickstart is pretty popular and easier to use, but has less features.
One of the plus sides of the plugin is that you can totally shape the LFO any way you like.

3 Pro-L

This is the limiter of Fabfilter is in one word amazing.
It`s clean, it`s simple and probably the most used limiter plugin on earth.
See everything is (again) the major strength of this plugin.

2 Pro-Q

The equalizer of Fabfilter is just plain brilliant.
Again, you see everything what the plugin does.
It`s easy to configure, user friendly and very pleasing to the eye.
You can freeze the waveform so you can see in detail what is going on, preview frequencies and even choose the algorithm if you run into unintended artifacs.

1 Serum

And then the last plugin on my favorite plugin of all time.
Serum by XFer records is an wavetable synthesizer, a wavetable meaning that your waveform can change over time.

The truth is there are lots of awesome ones to check out, and it’s easy to get confused as to which ones are best suited for you. It may not be the most attractive interface I’ve ever seen, but by gum does this bad-boy pack a wallop.

The Face Bender VST (from Distorque) is an emulation of a Tone Bender and Fuzz Face. (Disclaimer: I’ve never tried the original of either of those pedals).

While the Fuzz Face option leaves me a little cold (we’re talking warm, spongy fuzz here), switching the unit over to the Tone Bender setting got things rocking. Simply put, this little unit flippin’ howls!

Inspired by the Commodore 64, basic 65 is a monophonic synth which takes the legendary SID chip from its hardware predecessor and adds more features to ‘take a step further’. There’s plenty to tweak in the back end — tone controls, filters etc. — but the real magic happens when you start messing with the gate. A little bit will clean up your tone nicely, while way up will leave you with a gagging, stuttering guitar tone of the gods.

There is more tweakage to be had as the pitch of the incoming signal can be controlled via a pitch knob or a sync to host LFO. Interestingly, it can be used as a virtual whammy bar for other instruments although you can adjust the pitch response to suit diverse vocal styles.

4) Graillon 2

Relatively new on the radar, Graillon 2 sports a retro-futuristic GUI and offers a ton of quirky settings to get you started. To add to its retro vibe, the VST has an embedded meter that looks like those on vintage rack mounts and is just as useful. The meter itself is easily understood and has a delineated red threshold so you can tell whether or not you’re clipping even with just a quick glance. The main focus of the plugin is the input and output, nothing else really besides the compression modes, making it a great option for beginners.

Moreover, Klanghelm produces a bulkier compressor VST entitled DC8C, so DC1A acts as a great trial run before investing in a paid plugin. For a seasoned engineer, this VST may be oversimplified, but those looking for efficiency or that classic mono sound, this is an excellent choice.

For example, the VST has a dial-in frequency feature that allows the user to enter precisely what frequency he/she would like to be emphasized or lowered. You are able to add an unlimited amount of bands to give absolute clarity to the vocal and add polish to its final master. The bandwidth can be widened or narrowed with a few mouse clicks, streamlining the process.

Moreover, each band has a separate bypass toggle, meaning that you can easily switch one on/off to compare a sound before/after processing. This EQ is super useful in achieving a retro sound, as it is a digitized version of an analog-style Equalizer. Luftikus is set up like a traditional rack mount and has 5 fixed-frequency EQ bands with corresponding knobs. This feature could be seen as limiting during the mastering process as you cannot type in specific frequencies in the same way that you can with previously mentioned ReaEQ.

However, if you’re mastering a vocal bus with multiple vocal tracks, having fixed bands can help simplify the process and give you a little boost without being excessive. In addition, the VST has an added “mastering” mode which removes superfluous features to get you in and out of mastering efficiently. Luftikus has a separate section dedicated to boosting the high-end frequencies and a couple of preset options between 2.5-40K Hz which is particularly useful during the vocal mastering process.

Outside of the presets, the high-end boost has a knob that can be altered for a more specific vocal top-end boost. The plugin has a “keep gain” button designed to make changes appear more subtle than drastic while EQing, ideal for mastering. The colorful interface makes it exciting to use and Luftikus proves to consistently create masters with a bit more of a vintage feel.

Free Guitar Strumming Vst

Here’s something I don’t like to admit: I’m a terrible guitarist. Sure, I know the chords and scales and such, and I strum something out, but it can get messier than a famous drag queen disparaging transgender women. Thus, I was left wondering what a terrible guitarist can do when they want to get their tracks down, but don’t have small fortune to spend on session guitarists.

I scavenged the underworld (aka the Internet) for solutions, focusing on getting a utility for a strumming guitar. Clearly, I wasn’t the only person with this problem as I found an overwhelming amount of options. As is typically the case, the best options were paid VSTs. However there are some free options available.

Just did a non-strum rhythm track on the RealLPC and was able to get all the nuances I was after. Hand problems have made recording rhythm parts with a real guitar very tedious, especially on acoustic. I still do the solos on a real electric guitar but having the MusicLab virtual guitars is a great help for basic parts. Studio Devil British Valve Custom is a FREE guitar amp modeling and audio effects plug-in for use with VST, AudioUnits, and ProTools RTAS compatible hosts running on both Mac and Windows platforms.

FREE STRUMMING GUITAR VSTs:

Below I include two different types of VST strummers. Some of you are looking for a control engine, some of you are probably looking for a stand alone sampler. The options are below.

Strummer, by Mildon.

I found this option to be a bit difficult to customize the sounds I wanted, but when you’re on a budget, it will do in a pinch. You’re not going to be able to customize this to pluck a single string, but it works well if you’re just fiddling with sounds, and have a VSTi you like. This is one of the least customizable solutions and doesn’t use its own samples.

A nice thing about it compared to other free and paid options is that you can use whatever sample or VSTi you already have. It was fun to experiment with non-guitar samples using this, but I would avoid it if you have a particular sound/pattern in mind as it’s a bit hard to dial it in just right.

Ample Sound Guitar M Lite (AGML).

This is a beautifully sampled instrument. There was a bit of a learning curve on this, but once I figured it out I was amazed at what I could accomplish. This is the light version of the paid product, which takes away a few options, but is still a very capable instrument. There are several free instruments available through Ample, including a bass guitar, all of which have been a huge help to me in creating guitar sounds.

One thing I really appreciate with this instrument is that you can see the strings and frets as you are playing, creating a bit of a “learn more about the guitar” feeling. I put together a track with this and sent it to a talented guitarist friend with the question, “How does this sound?” Her response was, “Who’s playing the guitar?” It convinced her, but we both could tell the guitar was too perfect. There are settings that can help create a more convincing sound, though.

I can’t recommend this enough for the price – free. A comparison chart of the free and paid version is below under the full version of AGM.

PAID STRUMMING GUITAR VSTs:

Komplete Native Instruments Session Guitarist, Strummed Acoustic 2. ($99.00 USD)

I’m going to be honest here. I bought this instrument from Komplete Native Instruments and never got to use it. The problem was with the installation process. My studio is in a rural environment with limited internet, and this thing is huge. For most large files, I download them off-sight and take them into the studio on a flash drive to install. Unfortunately, this one requires you download their manager software onto the computer you will use the instrument on, then download the install file. You also have to download Komplete Player.

That’s a lot of downloading when you have poor internet access. I’m including it here because I spent a lot of time before buying it watching videos and it sounds great and seems to work like some of the other options. Plus, their support team was amazing to work with. They provided me with an installation work-around (which was overly complex for my sometimes tech-challenged self. When I couldn’t get that to work, they refunded my money. Kudos to a company for providing that support.

If you do have good internet access, no price limitations, and don’t mind all the extra stuff on your system (or already use Kontakt), you may as well give it a go.

Ample Sound Guitar MII (Not Lite, Paid, &169.00 USD).

See the information above for the AGML version, which is the free version of this instrument. Of all of them I tried, I love the Ample guitars most. The sound is great and I love the simplicity of setting up your patterns for the song (midi piano roll style) and using a midi keyboard to trigger the patterns (and chord changes). You can customize those patterns all the way down to single strings and you can trigger multiple chord voicings. The paid version provides additional features over the free version per the chart below:

I haven’t truly figured out why the chart says you only have a Finger option in the free version. I successfully “strummed” the free version. It’s likely because you can select pick or finger strum, but I stopped trying to decipher the exact meaning of this. Even with only 866 samples, the free version sounded a million times better than the AAS Strum GS-2 (below).

Applied Acoustic AAS Strum GS-2. ($199.00 USD).

If you’re going for a 90’s sampled guitar sound, this is the instrument for you. Really, it sounds like crap. Now, if you spend a lot of time with effects and don’t care that your acoustic guitar sounds more like a synth, you can almost get a real enough sound to fool a few people if your guitar is way back in your mix. Seriously, I hated the sound of this so much I spent exactly 30 seconds on it before concluding it was a big no. I’m hoping someone will correct me and I’ll learn I’m just ignorant and this is a great tool.

MusicLab Real Guitar V. ($199.00 USD)

This instrument would be my second choice in the lineup so far. It’s 2nd to Amples AGM/AGML only because of the price. Sound wise, they are very close in realism. Both involve a learning curve, but once you understand one the other comes pretty quickly as they are played similarly. I do like that the Real Guitar combines a Classic and Steel String Guitar (you choose), essentially giving you a second instrument not provided by Ample. If price isn’t a huge factor for you, then MusicLab’s Real Guitar V is a great option.

Can you recommend a 64 bit Windows VST plugin that offers several good preset instrument sounds, especially a realistic sounding acoustic bass such as heard in the old Cakewalk TTS-1 synth? DVS sax was the first free virtual saxophone I ever tried and my first impression was the way you could fiddle intuitively with the parameters and create an unimaginable saxophone sounds. The author of this plugin pays careful attention to the way the velocity and the pitch bend effect compliment the current key you are holding onto or playing.

Additionally, DVS saxophone provides built-in reverb effects, an option to change the size of the sax and lastly the level knob. One feature I can’t do without is the auto-vibrato, it’s absolutely amazing, give it a try.

2.) DSK Saxophone

This is a free saxophone VST instrument from DSK that provides an option to select a saxophone type such as the Soprano and Tenor. It also features an ADSR envelope control, which describes how the saxophone sound changes over time.

An explanation on how the ADSR(Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release) works:

The Attack controls the time it takes for your sound to go from silent to the loudest levels, Decay time control how long or the time it takes to go from the loudest level to the sustain level, Sustain is the level that the sax maintains when you hold a note, and Release control how long it takes the Sax sound to return the silence after a key is released.

I personally love setting a longer release, that way, it takes some time for the sax sound to fade away, of course, play with the settings yourself.

Additionally, it features a velocity curve selector and an inbuilt reverb fx for simulating the ambiance in a recording room.

5.) Naokit 72 Saxi Player

Saxi player is a free saxophone by Naokit and provides 3 types of saxophone sound such as Soprano, Alto & Tenor Sax. Also, it comes with some handy parameters and effects such as Reverb, Attack/Release control, Tangling control, Expression, Vibrato and more.

I would be honest with you, I had some issue getting this to work, for example, you can’t hold two notes together, probably because it supports only monophonic sound, so, the way to fix this is to play one note at a time or render different notes and stack them on top of each other, feel free to experiment with it, at least, it is free, thus we should appreciate that.

6.) IOWA Soprano Sax

Similar to the IOWA Alto sax, IOWA soprano sax is also a sample soprano saxophone from the University of IOWA Electronic Music Studio. It also gives you an option to control the sax sound through the ADSR envelope module.

If you’ve been producing music for a while, you probably know that a lot of the commercial guitar VSTs or libraries out there are pretty expensive and not always easy to use. Although I own a few commercial guitar libraries, I also wanted to see what free guitar VSTs and sample libraries are available these days. I have to admit I was surprised by the number of interesting instruments I found. So, I’ve put together this list to talk about the best ones.

For this article, I looked at both acoustic and electric guitars but left out guitar amps and other effect plugins (I will cover these in an upcoming article).

Free Acoustic Guitar Plugins

Ample Sound: Ample Guitar M II Lite

Format: AU, VST, AAX, RTAS / 32 bit + 62 bit
OS: Mac, Windows

Ample Sound is a Beijing-based company that has been creating guitar and bass VSTs since 2011. The Ample Guitar M II series aims “to bring the Martin D-41 Acoustic Guitar sound to your studio.” Luckily for us, the company also released a free lite version of the instrument, which comes with a reduced sample rate, fewer articulations and features and a lower sample count than the original (by now, version III has been released already).

This doesn’t prevent Ample Guitar M II Lite from being the best sounding (non-Kontakt) acoustic guitar in this list, though. The samples sound full and lively and can be triggered directly through MIDI (or your DAW) as well as through a built-in sequencer, the “strummer.”

The strummer makes it super easy to build patterns out of single notes, up and down strokes and mutes. Additionally, there are a bunch of effects and features available to change the tone. One of my favorite features is the doubling switch, which adds width to the instrument in an instant.

Another particular useful feature of Ample Guitar M II Lite is that it shows you which string corresponds to the note you’re playing. This quickly helped me create more realistic arpeggios.

If you also use Guitar Pro Tab, you can even import your tabs into Ample Guitar M II Lite. Note that you are limited to the first four frets of each string when you’re using the lite version.

There are so many fully functioning knobs and switches in this free plugin that I didn’t manage to get to all of them in my 45 minutes of playing around with it. What more can you ask for in a free guitar?

DSK Music: Dynamic Guitars

This guitar VST has gotten a lot of attention lately, especially since the release of LifeStyleDidIt’s video “I FOUND THE BEST FREE GUITAR VST” (see below). DSK Music is a project by a Spaniard named Víctor who has been making hundreds of free virtual instruments since 2002.

DynamicGuitars contains three different instruments: an acoustic guitar, a nylonguitar and a steel guitar. It also offers control over the envelope of thesamples as well as the dynamic range and the voice mode (poly, mono, legato). All the included guitars feel smooth, warm andthick but could use a little EQ action for clarity.

Pettinhouse Free Acoustic Guitars

Pettinhouse is a project by Andrea Pettinao. The company sells a wide variety of guitars and also offers a handful of free guitar sample libraries. Let’s take a look at them!

FreeAcousticGuitar

Format: Kontakt 3 and higher (full version required!)

Free AcousticGuitar is a simple but well-recorded and programmed acoustic guitar Kontakt library. The samples are loaded as a multi and are separated into attack+ sustain, releases and fret noise sounds and come in different velocities. The samples are well mixed and sound wonderfully natural.

FreeClassicGuitar

Format: Kontakt 5 and higher (full version required!)

When you open the free version of Pettinhouse’s Classic Guitar, you’re getting a multi consisting of two instruments: classic guitar and noises. These work well together and offer a realistic and nice warm sound.

Yummy Beats: Modest Guitar

Format: Kontakt 5 and higher (full version required!)

Yummy Beats is a platform for drums, loops and Kontakt instruments. You can also find a few free instruments on this site, including the free Modest Guitar. This Kontakt library delivers a present sound with round robin and three articulations: acoustic guitar, flageolets and fx guitar. Unfortunately, I found that the fx guitar produced noticeable crackle sounds (might have been my setup!). However, my favorite part is the flageolets with their well-rounded tone, anyway.

I found the steps to get Modest Guitar a little complicated. You have to open a Yummy Beats account, go to this page and enter the unlock code that you find here. If you’re looking for a free, quality flageolet sound, this is a good instrument to try out, though.

Looking for a smooth moody guitar that fits into an ambient track or your next film score? Peel Guitar might be it! Originally, the guitar was sampled by Christian Henson in 2006 and, according to him, was used all over his scores. The instrument consists of three presets that differ slightly in guitar tone. Each guitar feels soft and comes with a long release, which adds to the atmosphere of the instrument. The minimalist interface offers control over the volume, velocity, reverb and “tightness” of the sound. To get Peel Guitar, you will need to install Spitfire Labs first (also free).

Description

At Relayer's core is a variable multi-tap engine, providing up to 32 delay lines. Delay times are initially set with a typical free or host-synced time parameter and then modulated by swing and warp controls, allowing for quick and easy bouncing ball-style effects.
Though the UltraTap is basically a multi-tap delay, Eventide takes it upon themselves to infuse strange sounds and secondary effects to the plugin. Secondary effects include comb filtering, effects that sound like reverb, volume swells, crunchy delays, comb filtering, and many more.
